introduction and objectives

The Florida Society for Materials Simulation (FSMS) was initiated in 2006 at the University of Central Florida. However, the original idea for the FSMS resulted from a meeting held in 2005 at the University of Florida. Current participants in the FSMS include faculty from the University of Florida (UF), University of Central Florida (UCF), University of South Florida (USF), and Florida State University (FSU).

The objectives of the FSMS are to stimulate collaborations between members representing universities throughout the state of Florida and enhance educational opportunities through the annual meeting and hands-on workshop activities. Recently, the FSMS members have launched a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site with sponsorship from the National Science Foundation (NSF). This new program will help the FSMS expose undergradates to cutting edge research conducted by FSMS members. More details on this educational opportunity can be found through links on this site.

Annual Meeting and Workshop

Since 2005, the members of the FSMS have held meetings during the summer break. The meetings include faculty talks, student posters, and a hands-on workshop. A broad range of topics have been covered in the workshop sessions, including molecular-dynamics simulation, tight-binding models, and phase-field simulation. The next meeting is scheduled for July 2009 at the University of Florida. In addition to the usual contents of the meeting, the 2009 meeting will also include a wrap-up session with presentations from the REU participants. More details for the 2009 meeting will be posted on this site.
