Answers to the worksheets of homework #6.


Exercise #1

This is asking about the entire surface of the Moon -- so
the answer is 50% for all phases.



Exercise #2

This asks for the amount of the Moon's illuminated surface
that is visible from Earth. It is not asking about the 
illuminated surface as a whole -- which would be 50% for all
phases. The ranking here is:  AF(BE)CD.
(B and E are the same.)



Exercise #3

First identify the five phases shown. They are:
A - waxing crescent
B - third quarter
C - first quarter
D - waning gibbous
E - waning crescent

So if you have to start with waxing gibbous as the ranking asks,
the order here is DBEAC.

Exercise #4

You should do this step by step.
Panel A: You should be able to identify this phase as Full Moon
by the shape. It's crossing the meridian, so the time must be about 
midnight.
Panel B: You should be able to identify this phase as New Moon
by the shape. It's about to set, so the time must be about 6 p.m.
Panel C: You should be able to identify this phase as Waxing Gibbous
by the shape. It's in between crossing the meridian and setting in
the west, so the time must be about midnight.
Panel D: You should be able to identify this phase as Waning Crescent
by the shape. It has just risen in the east, so the time must be
about 3 a.m.
Panel E: You should be able to identify this phase as First Quarter
by the shape. It is crossing the meridian, so the time must be about 6 p.m.
Panel F: You should be able to identify this phase as Third Quarter
by the shape. It is crossing the meridian, so the time must be about 6 a.m.

So the times are:
A - midnight
B - 6 p.m.
C - midnight
D - 3 a.m.
E - 6 p.m.
F - 6 a.m.

The ranking asks you to start at 6 a.m., so the ranking
is F(BE)(AC)D.


Exercise #5

This is the trickiest one of all. You should do it step by step.
Panel A: You should be able to identify this phase as Third Quarter
by the shape. It's crossing the meridian, so the time must be about 6 a.m.
Panel B: You should be able to identify this phase as Full Moon
by the shape. It's between crossing the meridian and setting in the
west, so the time must be about 3 a.m.
Panel C: You should be able to identify this phase as Waxing Gibbous
by the shape. It's between rising in the east and crossing the meridian,
so the time must be about 6 p.m.
Panel D: You should be able to identify this phase as Third Quarter
by the shape. It has just risen, so it must be about midnight.
Panel E: You should be able to identify this phase as Waxing Crescent
by the shape, although admittedly it's drawn a bit oddly. It is crossing
the meridian, so the time must be about 3 p.m.
Panel F: You should be able to identify this phase as First Quarter
by the shape. It's between crossing the meridian and setting in the
west, so the time must be about 9 p.m.

So the times are:
A - 6 a.m.
B - 3 a.m.
C - 6 p.m.
D - midnight
E - 3 p.m.
F - 9 p.m.

The ranking asks you to start at 6 a.m., so the ranking
is AECFDB.
