SCALE-UP Implementer's Workshop
June 7-8, 2002 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando
NC State and University of Central Florida are offering a 2-day workshop for faculty interested in adopting/adapting the SCALE-UP curriculum. The SCALE-UP project has developed ways to use Physics Education Research (PER)-based materials developed for small classes and sections and use them to create effective studio classes for up to 100 students. Although the hundreds of lesson plans that are available were designed for large enrollment classes, these PER-based collaborative activities can also be used in smaller classes. This workshop is designed to help prepare instructors to teach their own SCALE-UP style introductory courses. It is also helpful to faculty who are thinking about adopting SCALE-UP and and want to know more about what is involved in teaching a SCALE-UP introductory physics class. Participants will receive a SCALE-UP CD and notebook of activities for Mechanics, Waves, E & M, Optics, and Modern Physics.
(For more information on the SCALE-UP Project, visit http://www.ncsu.edu/PER.)
The workshop will run in the UCF SCALE-UP classroom (directions) at the following times:
Friday 2-6 PM
Saturday 9-6 PM
Out of town participants will be staying at the UCF Radison Hotel
(see below for directions).
Parking Permits for Friday are available at the visitor center (see campus
